New & Improved Kitchen Design Ideas

 

Designed by the talented interior designer, Caitlin Creer of Caitlin Creer Interiors and with cabinetry by C. S. Cabinetry & Design, this newly completed kitchen is full of new and improved design ideas. The color palette, although soothing, is far from being pale or boring. Backplash tile takes a new step with the usage of traditional subway tile mixing with patterned tile and the lighting brings even more personality to a large island for six!

There’s so much to love about this kitchen. Did you notice the size of the island? There’s plenty of space to prepare food and it seats six!

Kitchen Island Paint Color

The island paint color is Farrow and Ball Down Pipe. “Farrow and Ball Down Pipe” is a deep color that works great on cabinets, doors and exteriors.

Pendants: Currey and Company.

Island Legs

These square legs are so popular right now and this is one of my absolutely favorites! The bottom of the leg is 4.75″ and the top is 7.5″.

Backsplash

Kitchen Backsplash: Ann Sacks – Savoy Ceramic Field Tile 3.8″ x 7.7″ – similar tile can be found here.

Range is Wolf.

Cabinetry & Hardware

The beaded-inset cabinets are painted maple.

Pulls: Artesia Pull Sedona Bronze DLH 224mm – 9 -1/4″.

Kitchen Ceiling Paint Color: White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

A solid Oak drip edge, oiled, prevents the inevitable wear on the paint.

Cabinet paint color is “Benjamin Moore OC-17 White Dove”.

The cabinets feature custom base.

Inside of the cabinet you will find plenty of space for appliances. Notice the retractable doors.

Hello! How are you today? Are you excited for Halloween? I have being more cautious with my eating habits lately. I am trying to eat “clean” as possible, so it will be hard to see the kids bringing candy bars home tomorrow! I need to be strong! I am not actually doing this to be thinner – I feel comfortable with my weight and health, but after done a lot of researches I have realized that food simply is not the same anymore. Meat don’t taste as it did when I was a kid, milk, everything has changed and I felt it was the time to educate myself and make some good changes – changes that should help me to feel healthier, be better and to have more energy. It’s never too late to learn and to improve ourselves and our health.

20 Modern Black and White Kitchens That Used Wood

In designing the interior of our home, we are given many different choices when it comes to color and materials.

Whatever is our choice has a great impact on how the space will look like and it will create the aura of the space.

Have you felt the difference of a room with all white colors and another with some bold feature in it?

For sure, you did!

You have to take this into consideration when choosing colors and materials for your home.

Do you know what the commonly used palette in a residential interior is?

Yes, your guess is right. It’s neutral colors. Many homeowners prefer this since it creates a warm and relaxing aura. But of course, you can also see some bright accents around the home.

This bright and open kitchen is surrounded by glass windows around it. There are also folding doors that allow access to the outdoor area. The kitchen island adds a luxurious appeal to the space.

Look at how wood is being integrated into this kitchen. Notice how beautiful wood looks on the island and cabinets. The string of light in the cabinet also adds beauty to the area. In fact, it is very eye-catching!

The stone slab backsplash is one feature that made it look attractive. Notice also that glass is used at one side of the kitchen which brings natural light into the space.

The natural appeal of wood could really have a great impact in any space. It looks good whatever you pair it with. Our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” is going all the way to Australia today! I can’t tell you enough how much I love that country! I have many amazing readers from there and have even had some clients from Australia and because of that, this new “BHI” feels extra special for me. Sharing Ali’s, from @urban_farmhouse_build, stunning newly built home will be a treat for all of us!

Ali and I have been talking about this feature for some time now. You guys have no idea how hard she worked to have her house ready. She really wanted the pictures to be good and she did all she could to make the home look amazing. I honestly can’t thank her enough. The feature couldn’t get any better, Ali!

As you will see, the soothing color palette makes Ali’s entire home feel calm, serene and stress-free and who wouldn’t love to live in a place that has this kind of feeling? Read on to know more about this talented homeowner and her inspiring home.

 

“My name is Ali and I was so delighted when Luciane invited me to share our home with you on Home Bunch. I have always loved interior design and architecture, and have so enjoyed the creative process of designing and building our family home. We live in a small town in the Southern Highlands (1.5 hour drive south of Sydney, Australia) with our 3 children. We had been lucky enough to have the opportunity to build our last house, which we loved, but it was a large country block further out of town, and we found that the long trek from home to school was wearing thin. We dreamed of finding land closer to town, but that still had a rural feel and open vistas that we had so enjoyed in our last home. We finally found what we were looking for, but there were a couple of hurdles to overcome – it was more land than we wanted to look after, and it was prone to flooding. Two years later, after a subdivision and endless earthworks, we could finally start building our home.

I often think what on earth we did for inspiration before the internet. Sites like Pinterest, Houzz and Home Bunch where a great source for ideas, and my husband John and I luckily shared the same vision and kept saving the same pictures – white board and batten modern farmhouses. Whilst a common feature in the American and New Zealand houses we loved, board and batten is not often used as a building material in Australia and we were keen to use something a little different. Standing seam roofs were also a regular feature in our “dream home” pictures, and an overall aesthetic that was a clean, contemporary interpretation of classic farmhouse style. Luckily we found an architect who was great at translating our dreams into affordable reality and we finally started building about 2 years ago. The build, although slower than we hoped, went very smoothly and we moved in a little over a year ago.

The process of decorating has been a slow one, and is still not finished! We had some favourite pieces of furniture from our old house, but much of it didn’t fit in size or style, or had not survived the young children stage. Finding the time to source the finishing touches remains a challenge, but I’m trying to be patient! It’s such a lovely house to live in, bright, cozy and comfortable, and we are so enjoying just being here.  The garden is also very much a work in progress. We planted a “stage one” garden when we moved in so as to have some instant grass for the kids (and pets!), but plan to expand on it with more beds and trees in the coming months. A small guest/pool house is also in the pipeline for the beginning of next year.

John and I have so enjoyed the process of building our home that since finishing it last year, we have joined forces in a commercial venture, subdividing another block of land and building 3 spec homes. They are in a similar “modern country” style and have been a wonderful opportunity to use many of the ideas and finishes that we didn’t get a chance to use in our house. They were well received and sold quickly, so being the gluttons for punishment that we clearly are, we have recently purchased a new block of land in town and look forward to next year’s project of building two more cottages (past project photos are on Instagram @copelanddevelopments). I find that my style is constantly evolving, so it’s very rewarding having the opportunity to start from scratch and design something new each time.

When I’m not designing houses I love to paint, and I’m also involved in local theatre – acting, directing and set designing. It’s taken me until my 40s to realise that as long as I’m doing something creative, I’m happy!”

Kitchen

Having had a white kitchen in our last 2 houses, I was keen to do something different. I had always loved Martha Stewart’s Bedford Grey kitchen, but as it is unavailable in Australia, went through endless paint samples trying to find a similar shade of “greige”. We used Dulux “Narrow Neck” in Double strength.

Countertop

The countertops are 40mm honed Carrara marble.

Breakfast Nook

This stunning grey kitchen opens to a bright breakfast nook with banquette. Isn’t it dreamy?

Faucet & Backsplash

Tapware is Perrin & Rowe “Io” in satin nickel from The English Tapware Company.

Lighting

Lights are the Eldridge Pendant from Ballard Designs.

Flooring & Hardware

The flooring is engineered oak in the colour “Cannes” from Preferences Flooring – similar can be found here.

Handles and pull are the “Duluth” range in satin nickel from Restoration Hardware.

Open Feel

The kitchen opens to family room with board and batten fireplace and vaulted tongue and groove ceiling. This is just stunning!

Layout

A peninsula divides the kitchen from the dining area.

Dining Room

Dining room light is the Large Rectangular Linen Shade Pendant from Restoration Hardware in “Sand”.

Living Room

We love the high raked ceiling in this space and the open floor plan, which helps the room feel bright and spacious. The barn doors are a favourite feature and were custom made for us by the builder.

Wall lights above oak shelving are Boston Library lights in antique nickel from Circa Lighting.

Fireplace is faced with Buxeuil Limestone.

Paint Color

Paint colour is Dulux “Snowy Mountains”  Half Strength.

Linen sofas are from Molmic Sofas.

Pillows

Pillows from Boho Pillow and Walter G.

Lounge Room

We call this our “night room” as it is were John and I retreat to after the kids are in bed. I wanted to make it more intimate and cozy than the living room by using timber paneling and textured wallpaper. The furniture is all from our old house which we have had some time. I’m hoping to eventually update some of the pieces, but in the meantime, it’s a very comfortable place to curl up and watch TV.

Wallpaper is Thibaut Coastal Sisal in “Aqua”. Paintwork is Dulux “Snowy Mountains” Half Strength.

Wood weave blinds are the “le Blinde” range from Peter Meyer.

I love how Ali decorated her tray.

Powder Room

I wanted to do something whimsical and fun in the powder room and so took the opportunity to use one of my favourite wallpapers, the “Woods” design by Cole & Son.

In keeping with the monochrome palate, I used a small gloss white penny round tiles on the floor and a black and nickel “Bistro” wall sconce from Restoration Hardware.

Snug

This is what we call the kids hang out space. I recently purchased these gorgeous pillows from Boho Pillow, which has really made the space. I’m really hoping they look after them! Coffee table from Pottery Barn – no longer available. Concrete top coffee tables can be found here & here.

Grey Sectional

Sofa from Sofa Studio.

Paint colour is Dulux “Pukaki” half strength.

Rug from Temple and Webster. 

Tray

Tray from West Elm.

 

Kids Bathroom

This stunning bathroom features a large curbless walk-in shower with freestanding bath. This is perfect to bathe the kids and not have to worry with the splashes! Feature wall is Carrara Marble subway tiles.

Vanity

Cabinetry is painted Dulux “Snowy Mountains” Half Strength, bench top is Caesarstone “Fresh Concrete”. Cabinet pulls are the “Aubrey Pull” from Restoration Hardware.

Master Bedroom

My favourite colours are all blue/green greys and I knew I wanted to paint our bedroom these tones as I find them so restful. The bedroom gets lots of sunshine and with it’s wood paneling and garden views it is a wonderful sanctuary.

Quilt

Bedside lamps from Bloomingdales Lighting. Beads from McGee & Co. Bedside tables are from Coco Republic.

What a great gift it is to start a brand new week, isn’t it? I feel so Blessed because I could finally rest a little during this weekend. I had a very bad cold last week and this forced me to take a break from everything, which made me realize how necessary it is to slow down a little and enjoy the small things – such as staying in bed and see the clouds moving from your window. When was the last time you let the time go by without rushing? And at the end, why are we rushing so much? What is this race all about?

I am learning that I need to stop accepting external demands. I will do more of what’s important to myself. There’s nothing wrong on reinforcing on some boundaries from time-to-time, you know?

I am starting this week worrying less and living more and I hope you all can come along with me…

Dark Colors Are Used in This Modern Home in South Africa

Most homes would make use of neutral colors in its interior. And for the exterior, it would usually be white with some accents of black or brown.

But some homes actually use dark colors in most of its areas.

And guess what, it looks totally beautiful!

Yes, you read that right. It looks beautiful and not dull or ugly like what you would think it turn out.

Want some proof?

Well, today, we are going to feature a house designed by Greg Wright Architects. If you are a fan of spectacular home designs, you have surely come across one of their projects and all of them are amazing!

Like the other home designs of Greg Wright Architects, the house that we will feature today is also awesome not just in terms of design but also in terms of usage, sustainability, and others.

Guess what. This house isn’t the same as most houses because it made use of dark colors in the exterior and interior.

This is the proof we are talking about earlier. So, scroll down and take a look at what this home looks like.

Location: Cape Town, South Africa

Designer: Greg Wright Architects

Style: Contemporary

Number of Levels: One-storey

Unique feature: This modern home used dark colors both in the interior and exterior and it looks very beautiful!

Similar House: Charles House in Australia: A Modern Home That Grows with the Family

In Cape Town, South Africa sits a beautiful modern home. This is a project by Greg Wright Architects which is actually a renovation of this house.

The rear of the home has large windows and sliding doors which open the interior to a large patio with an outdoor lounge and dining area. The backyard has a swimming pool.

The dark exterior presents a bold modern look when combined with the greenery of the trees.

Inside the house, there are many dark elements that are continued throughout the space. However, the use of wood adds a warmth and lightness to the interior. The living room features a tiled wall behind the television and below it is plenty of firewood storage for the fireplace located next to it. The space also features a wood-framed window seat and access to a small outdoor patio on the right.

A large window makes the space bright. You can see here the dining area with a round glass dining table and the living room with dark gray sofa.

The kitchen is located just near a home office. It features matte black kitchen cabinets and a large island with plenty of seating.

A home office is located around the corner from the living room. It features a built-in wood shelving which lines the wall. The black cabinets match the black desk in this area.

Black carpets in this bedroom create a lovely contrast with the white walls and bed. There is also a black en-suite bathroom with a built-in bathtub is open to the rest of the room.

The bathroom in this house is black with a wooden floating vanity and a white bathtub surrounded with glass windows. The mirror on the wall made it look more spacious.

The master bedroom has another window seat nook that matches the wood accent wall. It also features black cabinetry and carpets which complements the grey tones in the bedding and on the headboard.

Next to the wood accent wall in the bedroom is a bathroom which is also open to the bedroom. It features a built-in bathtub that has views of the balcony and trees in the distance.

This one is the balcony located off the bathroom and master bedroom. It also used black in the area. Even the furniture is black! It also looks nice with the plants along its side.

You can see how it used black on the exterior and also inside the house. Even the bathroom is black too! But you noticed that it doesn’t have that Halloween feel, which you might expect. Instead, it looked timeless, striking and totally unique! This house makes us think that we can actually use the same for our future home. And it isn’t really just about the colors you use. It is about how you plan your entire home including the lighting, layout and all! If everything is well planned, then you will get a beautiful home even if it used black!

Having three kids, I find it extremely necessary to plan things ahead, which includes taking care of the small errands as well as the big ones, like renovating a bathroom, which is happening to us at this moment. Before and After: An Old Chino Canyon Home Gets a New Look

The trend these days is to do-it-yourself. This means that we can create different things using whatever materials we have. And of course, we have to do it on our own- even home design and decorating!

Can you believe that it is actually possible to do that?

Well, it sure is! You can design and decorate your home in whatever way you want. You can make your own decors using scarp or items from the dollar store. Or you can recycle some old things and reuse them in a totally new manner.

But did you know that even old homes can be reused?

Yes, you read that right. No matter how dilapidated the home is, it still has hope to transform into a beautiful home.

We will prove that to you through the images of the Chino Canyon house below.

This custom-built post and beam mid-century ranch house was built in 1954 at the base of San Jacinto Mountain in Palm Springs, California. It does look old, right? But it can still be renovated. And this is exactly what the new owners did to the home. You can see in the comparison of the old home to the new one. It looks really beautiful now, do you agree?

The material palette used for the house has been inspired by the desert. Sand-colored stucco is paired with wood elements for the house.

What you can see here is a private patio with a fire pit and small garden. It can be accessed through the master bedroom. Note that the roof on this area is open to let sunlight touch the area.

To welcome guests, there’s a small foyer with a large piece of art hanging on the wall. The original concrete floors were re-coated and sealed.

Simply by looking at the picture, you can see the difference of the space. You can see more of the interior in the next images.

Seen here is a large open plan room that houses the living room, dining room, and kitchen. There is a wall of windows that flood the room with natural light. Notice also how the designers combine contemporary and rustic elements in here.

One central element in the living room is the gray brick fireplace. Just off this area is a new patio and pool.

This is indeed a bright dining room because of the glass windows and doors around it. Notice that it has a large cloud-like pendant light hanging above it.

Beside the dining room is the kitchen which features dark cabinets. These are paired with stainless steel appliances and a patterned backsplash, creating a contemporary look.

Two pendant lights hang from the high ceiling of the guest bedroom in order to create beside lamps. The purple area rug breaks the combination of white and gray in the area.

The guest ensuite bathroom uses dark tiles, which is the same as the master bathroom. A backlit mirror provides ambient light in the room.

In the master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling that creates a sense of openness. It used neutral colors for a relaxing aura.

The master bathroom used dark tiles to create an accent wall. It also used glass partition to separate the shower from the bathtub. The wall behind the mirror and vanity also used the same dark tiles.

The house also features a studio/home office that also doubles as a gym. Wood framed glass doors open up to the patio and the front courtyard.

When renovating, the designers saved as many of the original plants as possible, which includes a very mature Monstrose Apple Cactus.

From the patio, one can see a new pool that’s surrounded by landscaping to match the courtyard with the front of the house.

Seen here is a private patio that can be accessed from the guest bedroom. It is surrounded by the weathered steel fence.

Rusted steel fence is used for the house which complements its desert inspiration. Behind the fence is a courtyard with desert landscaping and steps that lead to the front door.

There is indeed a big difference from the old house to the recent one after the renovation. But you can still traces of the old home just like its form. Usually, designers would retain some portions of the home to remind the owners of its past. And this retained portion always add drama to the house just like this project by Hundred Mile House. What makes the house nice isn’t just its design but its closeness to nature. When you look at the outdoor area, there are plants and a spot to relax while under the sun. No doubt, if you have everything like what this house has, you would love to go home every day!

This Poznan Apartment Has Unique Geometric Features in the Interior

Although it is okay to go with the trend, it is also good if you do something unique.

When you are different, you are special. But only a few people are brave enough to be different since it is in the norms of our society to have that feeling of being accepted and wanted.

Same is true with home design. Some designers prefer to work on a design in such a way that it is similar to what others are doing because of the idea that this is what the society accepts.

But in truth, it better to be unique.

Do you also believe in this?

Well, speaking of being different and unique, we are going to show you an apartment in Poznan that has a beautiful distinct interior.

Instead of the usual flat panel cabinets and walls, it added geometric cut-outs in it.

Do you get what I mean?

Unique feature: This apartment renovation resulted into a beautiful interior that features geometric cut-outs.

A top floor apartment which overlooks the Poznan, Poland was once a builder grade and unfinished space. But it was transformed into a modern industrial space with bold details. The designers reworked the layout to make better sense and to take advantage of all of the windows around it. The goal was to have glimpses of the view from the moment one enters the apartment.

The new layout affords an open living and dining room with uninterrupted window views in the corner of the apartment. Some of the raw, industrial elements were retained that add charm to the space.

Here is a closer look of the geometric cut-outs. Isn’t it beautiful? The designers added another design layer into the interior by outfitting the built-in cabinets with geometric door fronts.

The kitchen, guitar room, and guest room can all be entered from either side. This gives the apartment an open feel and lets light further into the interior.

False cabinet doors were added to hide a large concrete wall, with the cut-outs showing glimpses of the wall. A wood lined shelf acts as a serving window from the kitchen to the dining area. You can also see here that there is a guitar on the wall. Although the guitar is stored this way, it also doubles as a decoration.

The dining room sits in the same space as the living and kitchen area. The house is surrounded with glass which makes it appear transparent from outside. Notice that there are many geometric features in here which compliments with the cut-outs in the cabinets.

What I like this compact kitchen is that it has everything one needs in order to prepare food, without the need of using a large space. It also has some plants in it which I assume are herbs.

Although small, this kitchen works well for the owners. It has many storage spaces in it like the drawers, cabinets and open shelves. It is also good that it used wood for the shelves.

What you can see here is the hallway that leads to the bedroom and other parts of the house. There is also a glass door that opens to the balcony and another one for the main entrance.

Beautiful, right? Despite the minimal design of the space, the feature wall with a big white flower made it look very artistic. It is also nice that his room used a combination of wood and dark gray.

Another look at the bedroom which has a glass door that provides access to the balcony. Also seen in the picture is a white bathroom. This bathroom is also located inside the bedroom as well which features a glass enclosure for the shower area.

This is actually a study but it functions as a guitar room. To make sure that the views will not be disturbed, two walls made of glass were added to it so the sight lines are kept open.

What can you say about this interior? Isn’t it nice? It sure is! You can notice that Mili Mlodzi Ludzie did a different design to the cabinets by adding cut-outs to it. Others are openings to get some items from it while others have mesh coverings on it. The design of the apartment was enough to complement the natural, lush oak floor and the white, geometric fronts of the building. The whole look exudes a densely exposed view. This way, it connects the interior of the apartment with the city. This interior design is a proof that nothing is wrong with being unique. In fact, many will praise your courage for being different, just like how this Poznan apartment received a worldwide recognition because of its distinct design.

Avenue F: A Contemporary Home with a Detached Guest House

Some homes are located on a spacious lot which allows them to have more floor area for their house. But not all homeowners actually want a spacious home.

Do you agree?

There are some who prefer to have a small floor area but with a larger outdoor space. This way, they can have a good time outdoors.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own pool and relaxing backyard?

It would be awesome!

This is what you will see in the Avenue F residence that we are going to feature today. The home is located in the North Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin, Texas.

And it looks really cozy! Take a look!

Unique feature: The house features a separate guest house as well as a pool area.

The house was designed for a family who desired a home that would be welcoming and obliging to their frequent visitors. It features intersecting volume that continues a low profile across the street edge. This reduces the impact of the two-storey main volume beyond it.

The project is conceived as a transition between exterior and interior realms. It features a generous covered front porch which extends to a carport canopy.

Inside the house, the interior is designed to be bright and airy. It has a calm and relaxing environment because of its choice of colors and furniture.

In the kitchen, one can see bright white cabinets and countertops which are paired with light wood and hexagonal tiles for a contemporary look. I also love the pendant light here located just above the island.

You can get a closer look at the kitchen with light wood walls and hexagonal backsplash. There are also large windows around it which makes the space bright.

The dining room also used the same wood that is used in the kitchen for an accent wall. Built-in white cabinets provide additional storage in the house and it acts as a space to display art and decorative items.

This is the master bathroom with a large double-sink vanity. This provides plenty of storage that runs the length of the wall. The shower is partitioned off with a glass shower screen.

And this is the master bedroom featuring black-framed windows that provide views of the backyard and which fills the room with natural light. The home’s master suite overlooks both the front and rear scenes, perched among the tree canopy, and completing the facade compositions with tight modern detailing.

The backyard of the home has a covered outdoor dining area just off the living room, lap pool and a fire pit with seating, all perfect for entertaining guests.

The backyard is also home is where the detached guest house is located. It has a wood slat screen wall which hides the exterior stairs. Also seen in the backyard is a lap pool and fire pit. This would be a nice place to relax!

This is the facade of the house where you can see the house number. Notice also that it used a combination of materials like concrete and wood.

Do you like this idea? You can also try having one like this wherein the guest house is separated from the main house. This project is designed by Clark Richardson Architects and they did an amazing job for the project. Notice that the house has everything one needs in it and it has a design that is just simple but beautiful. The entry into the home is compressed by a spine running the length of the home allowing the primary spaces to unfold along a subtly defined axis. The living and dining areas are directly linked on one side while the kitchen and stair are the opposite. The spine leads to a covered back patio, mimicking the front, which offers the same soft transition into the exterior. Even the guest house also mimics the look of the main house to create a coherent design. What can you say about Avenue F?
